I got called for jury duty. Again. For the third time. One of which was Grand Jury that lasted for 3 months. Come on folks, there are 300 million people in this country. You can't tell me that there aren't any qualified people who have never served. I know some of them. You can't tell me there are that many crimes committed in the entire history of this country (unless you count for profit wars). If there are that many crimes, then we have way too many stupid laws crafted on the planet Psychosia and its moons Subservia and Tyrannia, and we need to abolish those laws now.

They probably think I'm retired or something. AARP keeps sending me "join now" mail and my mailbox is flooded with arthritis advertisements. While these are admittedly superior to penis enlargement advertisements, they probably indicate that I've been flagged in some databases as "decrepit non-purchaser, use liberally for jury duty".

Of course, that doesn't explain the fact that [livejournal.com profile] rialian just got the preliminary notification in the mail too (it usually takes about 4 months for them to follow up with a summons to appear).

How odd. I got hit too. I'm going to have to check between 2/20-2/26 to see if I get tapped. Understandably I'm *so* thrilled to possibly trade a full workday with pay for the 'generous' 15.00 they pay for this.

This will be the third time in my life, I've never served on a jury though. I end up milling around at the courthouse and getting sent home.

I got hit last year around this time. If you have been called within the last 3 years you are not supposed to have to go. I would call the courthouse and ask to speak with someone. (atleast thats how it works on my side of the river).
I had to stay for a civil case, which was interesting. I liked my experience, but I know there are people out there who have never been called at all (like John, my dad, who will be 69 this year....)

Oh, my last jury duties weren't in the last 3 years by any means (though with my time sense it sure feels like under 3 years ago). The first time was around 1982. The second time (the grand jury stint) was in the early to mid 90s. The courthouse (and I) have lost all records of me ever having served, and at any rate, they can call you again after much less time has elapsed than that. I'd best get used to the idea of, as my boss instructed me to do, enjoying the ex[eroemce.

Both times were really unpleasant for me. The first time was an open-and-shut rape case. A group of youths had gang raped a girl and left her for dead in the snow. There was positive identification and verified confessions from all perps, heinous photos and testimony from the victim, a cambodian girl who had escaped from Pol Pot. Yeah.

The second time was Grand Jury. I will never forget when we were asked whether or not to bring the following case to trial. A guy was accused of rape. Several years before, he had gone on a date with a girl. They had both gotten drunk. There was a sexual encounter in the back seat of his car. She got pregnant and asked him if he would pay child support. He refused saying it was probably not his. She miscarried. Then she began seeing a psychiatrist, and somehow convinced both herself and the psychiatrist that in fact she had said "no" when it happened, and that it all happened against her will. That was when she decided she had been raped (two or three years after the fact). I voted against bringing this to trial. I was the only one. I later read in the paper that he got 20 years.

I. never. ever. want. to. be. part. of. a. group. that. decides. someone's. fate. again.

I've been called twice by the county, both times about a month after i moved from that particular county. I'd kind of like to go on one, too. Silly jury duty selector people.

I've actually been called 3 times (before this one). I was chosen to serve for two of them, and one of them (the last time) I was sent home (no trials that day or something). That means I'm probably at the top of the list.

Poor Helen *hugs*

I am fortunate that I've been called twice, but never had to serve. The first time, they actually put us in the jury lounge and showed us a panda documentary. Then they showed us the panda thing again, and made an announcement dismissing us all. We all went flying out of there.

The second time, I got excused because my grandmother died.
