In the case of Padraig (up on that page for appx a decade with no complaint from Mark), I'm going with "Attribute and link. If Mark want me to take it down, he knows where to find me and yell at me appropriately."
Thanks. I guess with practice I could get better at it. My favorite ones of mine are on the Waystrands pages (http://www.rialian.com/waystrands) -- I actually really tried with those because two of them were for a Kinships article. Still, they're very amateurish and other people's are so much more magical/beautiful/professional. I've actually asked someone if I could buy a license to use one of his pictures, and he still didn't respond.
There's a flow and naturalness to that one despite it being "amature-ish". What about looking for things that are considered creative commons? You could still alter the photo but could use it so long as you attributed it (at least that's the understanding I have of creative commons).
