A way to get rid of people you don't want to see on your Friends Of list.

1. Make sure you're logged in
2. Go to http://www.livejournal.com/admin/console/
3. Type ban_set username into the console

They magically disappear from your Friends Of list, never to be seen again, nor can they ever comment.

Thanks!

Thanks for the notice. It was very helpful in getting an offensive username off my journal list.

I don't suppose you could explain why you'd want to be able to do this? I really don't get it... can't we keep people out of our journals well enough using just filters, and the no-anonymous-comments or screen-nonfriends comments settings? I really don't understand what this lets us do that we couldn't already do. (Sorry if I'm being dense.)

There were a couple of abandoned journals I wanted to get rid of. Also, there's a new phenomenon in which people are randomly adding other people just for the sake of harassing them, and using deliberately obscene or otherwise objectionable names. For example, someone might sign onto the journal of an obvious Christian with the journal name of "i_love_demons" or something like that. Just to harass them. <lj user=rialian had accumulated a couple of those. Then there's my real reason. I'm addicted to friends list symmetry (I friend whoever friends me, and if someone I friend doesn't friend me back, I take them off after a month or a year, depending on how important they are to me. If someone's on my friends Of list that for whatever reason I simply can't stand (e.g., their journal makes me sick or they seem whacko or whatever), I don't personally want to see them on my friends of list. I can use this method to get them off of it once and for all and forget about them. Even though I remain on their friends list, I never need to know about that since I never check their journals, and they can't tell they're off my list since my friends of is hidden from view (unless they try to post, which they never do). Silly I fully admit, but there you have it.

I think I'm going to have to chalk this up as one of those things I not going to get, simply because I'm not wired right to be bothered by it. *shrugs* I guess I'm glad that other people have the feature now, if it's something they find useful in stopping something that was bothering them.

Definitely sympathise with the desire for friends-list symmetry. :) Balance in all things. (I also store all my paints and other art materials in a strict colour-related sequence of my own devising). Things like that bug me, sometimes.

a few things of interest regarding this:

it doesn't actually remove you from =their= friends list. this is a good thing in some ways; they won't notice it unless they go to your userinfo and look for their own name. now, you just KNOW that some OCD person is going to go through Every Single Friend of theirs to see who doesn't like them anymore. lol.

if you unban them, their name reappears.

i've used it to get rid of a few abandoned journals. there are a few people who friended me a long time ago; i have no idea who they are or from whence they came. they never comment in my journal, so i'm not sure they would even notice if i banned them.

Right - it acts sort of like a permanent filter - they're still there but you can't see them. Since my friends of list is hidden, the only way they'd ever find out is if they tried to post a comment, but I'm pretty sure the ones I removed were abandoned (they hadn't posted in over a year).

Wow, i wrote something in which I pretended, for the sake of my bitch-mistress, comedy, to have my comment blocked, and it did, in fact, block my comment. Irony.
