We're getting a Bat House!! Yay!

They say one bat can consume up to 1200 mosquitoes in an hour. Most of these bat houses can support a good number of bats - the low-end one supports 12, and the deluxe model supports 600 bats.

I could probably do this more cheaply at Amazon by getting a bat house kit:

Oh YEY!

I want one of those.

Actually, we're working on bird attractants at my house...you should see how many birds we've got on the deck now. Right now I'm working on finding a good house to attract the eastern bluebird, and perhaps get something to attract Orioles too.

Batboxes would be AWESOME. Always had a bit of a soft spot for bats, too :)

Being a bit of a bat affecionado, I say, COOL!

They are really easy and wonderful things. And buying a kit is fine, might be easier depending on time.

Please make sure the one you are getting is certified and built properly for species of bats native to North America!

A lot of these look good. I liked the designs at batcasa.com (not to mention their name)..

This one, though, was a bit over the top: http://www.maberrybat.com/bridgelodge.htm
That one might be appropriate for a conservancy with a lot of grounds (and funding) at its disposal... Supports up to 4,000 bats (there wouldn't be a single mosquito within 10 miles of me, but I'd have to attract something to eat the bats)...

years ago my mother asked for one for Christmas, and I managed to find one at the local farmer's market for about $20 or so. I'm not sure hos it works, but the maker assured me it did, and mom seemed thrilled.

Way cool. I never thought of doing that but bats are wonderful creatures if one can get past the creeps and the cringing. They eat a lot of mosquitoes and harmful insects that would otherwise make our lives very annoying. Not to mention threats of west nile and encephelitis. Good idea.
