From http://community.livejournal.com/beekeeping/54949.html:

The Obamas are going to have two beehives at the White House:

"A White House carpenter, Charlie Brandts, who is a beekeeper, will tend two hives for honey."

Edit: Here's the original article that sentence came from. They're setting up an organic garden that will be supplying the White House kitchen. The beehives are only mentioned in that one sentence:

That's so cool! Is this the first time such a thing has occurred?

Yes. In fact, he's going to have an entire vegetable garden. That will be the second one of those, the first one being Eleanor Roosevelt's victory garden. Here is the entire NY Times article: http://www.nytimes.com/2009/03/20/dining/20garden.html?_r=1&th&emc=th

The beehives are only mentioned in passing in one sentence (search on "hives" or "honey" to find it - it doesn't even say the word "Bee". No details were given. The rest of the garden is talked about throughout the article, though.

We have one beehive going again, hope to have one or two more going by late spring. I hope we do better with these than we did last year. :*(

Oh wow, that's awesome. Seriously, this is the first time a president has ever given me this much happy things to squee over. Thanks for sharing!

I liked this part:

"Virtually the entire Obama family, including the president, will pull weeds, “whether they like it or not,” Mrs. Obama said with a laugh"

Sheet mulching would solve their problem!

I wonder if they would be willing to have [livejournal.com profile] rialian teach a permaculture class at the white house, both for them and for the kids from the school who are helping them with the garden.

Ohhh you should write a letter or something and see - I bet they would. That would be neat in all kinds of ways :)

It's been so very long since anyone on the planet was able to say that about something occurring at the white house...
