helen99: A windswept tree against a starlit sky (Default)
[personal profile] helen99
I just got the daily search activity report for the website, and someone was searching for "trees of light". Please, who are you? Talk to me! What was it you were looking for? I wish I did have a page about "trees of light". Maybe I will...

Edit - Ah it's a Tolkien reference (Telpirion and Laurelin, slain by Melkor in the First Age).. Been a while since I read that - I'd forgotten. No wonder. People are always looking for Tolkien things on the website for some reason.

Still, what a neat concept just by itself, without any references...

"Trees of Light" ...

The Star Trees...

Part tree, part Starlight

Reaching from the blackwaters deep underground

branching out into the night sky,

a silver glow emanating from the transluscent bark...

Stop seeing the same things I do!

(Ok, I definitely don't really mean that.)

Just after I posted this, I remembered the painting you did of the star tree..

Er-wha? I have never painted such a thing. I wrote a stream-of-consciousness poem once...?

Are you sure? It was a visual representation of some sort - not sure if it was paint or conte crayon or what, but it was a star tree, and it was shimmery and really cool! I was sure it was you who did it. Maybe it was someone else. Who could have done that? Wanders off scratching head, doomed to an evening of searching through ER's archives.

Yeah, pretty sure. I remember pointing to a screenshot from the game "Loom" as a visual reference, but I really don't think I've painted any such thing myself (I made a stardragon painting once...). Are you thinking of the one that you had a userpic of a while back? That t'waren't me; can't remember who it was, now, but I think I have it named on my hard drive at home (at work, now).

Maybe that was it. The one from Loom. I'll check later... (right now Yahoo is being a butt).

That is a very lovely poem. And the picture of the tree is really quite lovely.

AAAUGH!!! I CAN'T FIND IT!! IT DOESN'T EXIST!!

Seriously... I found the poem itself on my hard drive, although I was frustrated that I didn't date-stamp it, which would have helped me narrow down where to look in the message archives. Unfortunately, I don't see it in the faerietales archives (where I was sure I'd posted it), which are small and easy to trawl through. I'm currently using a pretty unique word from the poem as my search string, hoping that I will be able to find it and thus a pointer to what visual I might have used, but no luck so far. Grr. I wish it searched more than 300 messages at a time. I'm only back to 43143-42799 of 59602. Stupid elven-realities. *glowers at it*

Aha! Way farther back than I thought - October of 2001. (I had thought sure it was in the summer of 2002, for some reason.) http://groups.yahoo.com/group/elven-realities/message/35882
The file I uploaded is no longer there, but now I know why you thought it was me that did it: I had originally uploaded a scan of a sketch in my journal (and later amended it to a screenshot from Loom). That was done in silver gel pen on the black journal-paper.

Oh my! Yes, that's the one (though my mind seems to have edited the memory to include some more colors in the background - maybe I'm superimposing this on the Loom shot). Thank you so much for taking all that trouble. I gave up at about the 40,000th message - Yahoo (and I) ran out of steam... 2001 is earlier than I remembered it too. I found the screenshot from Loom with Bobbin and the Swan-weavers against a backdrop of a starry lake and willows. That sure was a cool game.

I'll read the poem as soon as Yahoo quits saying, "Unfortunately we're unable to process your request at this time"... They've been saying that alot lately. They may be reaching capacity, or are under some sort of DoS attack.

Huh, odd. I've been getting a lot of timeouts on page loads, and a number of times what was frustrating the search was that it would give me a "ran out of memory" error (!), but later last night I seemed to have more luck. Maybe a combination of factors. *kicks yahoo anyway*

I like #3 better. The visual in my head is much more of bluish than purplish.

Agree - I was actually going to discard #2, but my perception of it somehow improved with time (I'm not sure why), so included it at the last minute. I'll be deleting the previous post soon - wanted to show you the results, but don't want to proliferate my tampering on the net.
