Or "How we spent our 4th of July". We figured that writing an article about ways to achieve true independence would be a good way to spend Independence Day.

Agreed... Because if trends continue, we'll need it. I'm posting this link to my LJ btw...

Y'know, I think the ideas you express on tribe in the article, never mind everything else, and the increasing dissatisfaction with my current living/work situation are one of the reasons I feel more at home at events like Thresholds than anywhere else, quite aside from the understanding I get there. On some level we *are* a tribe, or at least getting to be one. At home, it also feels as though I'm yelling into the wind most of the time, regardless of the connection to the land. There are quite a few times I feel I need to get out of here, and fast, even though I also know it's relatively safe - for the moment.

I'd like to see if permaculture would be possible in and around my mom's property just outside the Moncton, New Brunswick area, but it would require a lot of research. Not that I'm adverse to research... There's 35 acres there, and most of it's woods, which is completely hidden from the still only chip-sealed road. That would be a lot of area to hide enough food to feed a small comunittee. There's even a brook on part of the property.

A friend of mine mentioned the whishful desire to get some isolated land somewhere where we could retreat from if society got that bad. With the increasingly disturbing trends, that may very well become a necessity.

Have I ever mentioned to you guys that there were a few... visions I guess you'd call them, though more insights, really, several years ago, some of which go back to when I was living in Moncton, dealing with the continues dissatisfaction of the people and government increasingly turning a blind eye, reacting overly heavy-handed and strangling the populace, such as we saw in France during the summer, and at most of the World's protests, regarding most of these same things. It scares the crap out of me to think that I called it then.
