My neice called just now... She's pregnant - they're looking forward to the arrival in January 05.
Plus I just did a little arithmetic in my head and realized she turned 30 this year.

With respect to the passage of time, I've always been a bit like Wile E. Coyote, who during chase scenes, would often take about 8 steps into thin air off of a cliff. He was never aware that nothing was supporting him - he just kept walking as if everything was normal. Until he looked down, that is.

In my family I've always considered the successive generations as "not separate from mine" - Katie and her husband always looked at me more as a sister than an "aunt". My older brother John is ten years older than me. My younger brother Jason is ten years younger than me. Katie (the mom-to-be) is 13 years younger than Jason. But now there's the mystery baby - he or she will be 30 years younger than Katie. There's no way anyone can pretend this will be a little brother or sister. This is the first baby of a totally separate generation. As non-prolific as we are, it may be the last. But one is enough.

Looks down into the time-tunnel...

That's always a strange and somewhat disorienting moment for me -- I still get carded, but I'm now twice the age my mother was when she gave birth to me. The passage of time seems strange, sometimes like it has very little to do with me... until, as you say, I look around...

Yes - that's exactly it. You might look around your abode and notice that a tree that used to be a skinny little sapling is now 40 feet tall and 4 feet in diameter. Or you see a photo of your front yard and there were no plants in it, and now it's a jungle with many tall trees... Or you see pictures of all the pets who have passed away. Or you start losing your older relatives. Or your favorite shirt suddenly falls apart and it seems like you just got it. Or your car rusts to bits before your eyes but it seems like you got it last week. I also still get carded (but then, they card everyone).

Ah yes. Suddenly you realize that your baby is going to kindergarten this fall. Suddenly you realize that you are 35 not 20 and your health is not what it once was.

Seems to be a lot of that in the Flow just now. Time is speeding up.

If I'd had children, they would be about 25 years old now...
