Back to being able to listen to streaming indie at http://wwwnew.towson.edu/wtmd/wtmdlive.smil

Live streaming had been stopped during the 897 albums month. I wrote and told them I'd contribute... as soon as they gave me back my streaming. They must have gotten my letter and others like it, because this morning the announcer said, "those of you who were waiting for new music that you can't hear anywhere else, we're back!"

Pandora and other sites like it are ok, but there's something different about their streaming indie radio that I missed. Maybe it was the announcer talking about the bands, or maybe it was the fact that they often play genres I wouldn't have thought of listening to on my own, and so I was able to find out that I liked something I didn't know I liked...

I'm really glad that they're making a comeback. Back in the 80's they were WCVT and the only source for punk on the radio. I discovered so many of my favorite bands there and even used to record hours of their programming on cassette tape to listen to later. At some point in the late 80's/early 90's a new program director took over and they went to an almost New Agey format.

Ah, those are the same people? They do sneak a lot of 80s music like Patti Smith into the programming (which is fine with me), so that would explain it. The programming quality depends on when you listen to them. Their "Baltimore Unsigned" program is definitely a good one as well as their morning and afternoon shows for commuters and some other weekend programming. Other times (like 11:30 pm a few hours ago) they were playing something new agey -- not bad, though -- it was Carlos Nakai, who's one of the better ones. Anyway, there's always Pandora during the "off' times.

Oh and let me add that I'm really happy that I can actually listen to this on my FreeBSD machine and it's not some Windows hack site. Thanks again for the link.:)

You're welcome! I just managed to get the streaming to work (sure beats trying to get them by regular radio from Rockville.)

They never did have a very strong signal. I remember I used to have problems picking them up some times back when I was a teenager in AA county which is a lot closer to Towson than we are. I've got it running, now with the mozilla plug-in for mplayer.

Me too - Rialian still has to get the right plugin, but it's working on mine.
