For some reason I got a tug to call and check how Smurf is doing (the 19-year-old Chevy Cavalier that I sold to a coworker a while ago). Maybe it was because my mom owned that car before me and because it was so old when I sold it that it had developed a little personality of its own.

I talked to the new owner just now, and he said that three days ago Smurf got stolen. STOLEN??!? After 20 years of service and three owners, this car gets hot-wired and joy-ridden around town. I totally couldn't believe it. Smurf had an adventure!

The owner never expected to find it again, but after three days, the cops located it and it wasn't damaged. On the even brighter side, the owner's new job has worked out (he had been fired from my company about 2 days after I sold Smurf to him and before I had cashed the check - so I never cashed it). So... because the job has worked out he is once again solvent with money to spare, and he can write me a new check for Smurf which should get to me by Friday or Monday (yay extra money, since I just bought Stuff).

I didn't really call to collect from Smurf's owner though. That was just an excuse to call and see how Smurf was, heh.

For some reason, I think this is the beginning to a really great children's book - I even have illustrations running through my head! Don't ask me why though...

Go for it! I would be so thrilled to have Smurf immortalized that way. The new owner has a 2-year-old, too, so it would be really interesting to present him with that book if it was published...

Y'know the same thing happened to my tenant's jeep. We were all pretty surprized that the cops actually got off their butts and did something for a change

I had it happen to a new car once. I had just bought a cute little blue Ford Escort in 1981. Around Christmas of that year, my mom and I had gone shopping for presents together, and after putting some packages in the trunk, she left the keys in the trunk lock by mistake. Unfortunately for me, the local sociopathic car borrower happened to pass by just at the right moment, saw the keys, and drove off with the car. This person was not the brightest bulb in the pack, which is probably why I got the car back. Even though he had the keys, he managed to break the lock at some point. He also put footprints on the ceiling (that's a hard one to figure out). The police took a report and said that 'there was nothing they could do about it, and it was probably at a chop shop by the time they took the report' (they didn't want to get my hopes up). So not only I'd lost my cute little car (the first new one I'd ever bought), I also lost all my christmas presents, including a pretty porcelain Asian doll (I still have her). So imagine my elation when the cops called and said they found it. It was parked outside the home of one William Merica, along with about 6 other stolen vehicles. The guy obviously was not all there. He didn't try to sell them or make anything off of them - he just parked them in front of his home, license plates unchanged, until the police happened to stumble across them on a routine beat.

I believe the guy got a number of years for his collection of stolen cars (I was surprised he didn't get committed), but he's out now as far as I know.
