rialian.com out of space revisited

Mystery solved.

44,090 email messages stored on server.

[livejournal.com profile] rialian had forgotten to click the little checkbox in his email client to delete messages from server upon download... So we had 226 meg of spam stored in perpetuity upon rialian.com...

Of course, I didn't think of checking this until after my ISP/web host reminded me (in response to my frantically asking them if there was some huge, invisible file with tentacles in my documents area). So after a week of backing up and deleting all my journal pictures, (and a picture is worth 1000 words), I come to find out that the 226 offending meg were...

...
...
...
spam.

Poor [livejournal.com profile] rialian felt so bad... The scary thing is, the 44,090 email messages accumulated only since he set up the G3, which wasn't too long ago.

Now to start putting all my picture files back so my journals don't look like poor, bereft skeletons.

That's actually kinda funny... and a lot of meg worth of messages.

What's even funnier is that although he immediately deleted it, he still *forgot to click the checkbox again* so it still didn't get deleted off the server and he had to delete it a second time! Finally, 80,180 emails later, he got it all off of the server (and made sure the checkbox was permanently set to "delete").

I currently have 9.4 MB of spam stored on my server in about 1000 files. That figure includes spam from September 9, 2005 through today.

44,090 pieces of spam saved? OY. That's pretty impressive.

The day after he deleted it, four pages of email had already accumulated. My feeling is to disable the rialian.com emailbox and just use the his.com address exclusively (that one has a good spam filter - Postini - attached to it by the ISP). Either that, or maybe I could have it all forwarded to the his.com address, auto-deleted from rialian.com, and processed through the spam filter. Hmm. I'll talk to support to day. (One reason I'm willing to stay with Heller is their support team)...
