We have cable (ComCast). I did contact ComCast on the connection speed. They suggested about 25 things I should do to increase the speed of my computer (including purging the cache and closing unneeded files on the system tray, none of which had anything to do with it). They also suggested some tests to perform, which I didn't know how to do. They said that if it still wasn't fixed after that, then a technician would have to visit and there would be a charge. I wrote back and said all of that had already been done, and it had not fixed the problem. They asked which URLs were affected, so I said I was having difficulty accessing *their* site because of the dial-up speeds I was experiencing (I didn't mention you-tube at all). They said they would get back to me on it, then never did. A few days later, the speed was ok again. At this point I really don't know what it was. I hope it stays fixed...
Anyway thanks for the tip on DSL - maybe that's not a good alternative after all. I haven't had trouble with comcast until recently, and I'm not sure it was them.
