Well hum.

Last week, my workplace blocked Livejournal. Then today I hit a link to LJ by mistake (forgetting that it was blocked), and realized it wasn't blocked anymore.

I don't know what to make of this (but enjoying it while it lasts). For some reason Livejournal has been resistant to workplace blocking, as opposed to other blogging and social networking sites that are persistently blocked. Also once something is blocked, it usually stays blocked. Maybe some of the agencies have Livejournals...

Curiously, my office has never blocked LiveJournal, or any other blogging or social networks (just don't tell my IT department...)

I'm not sure how my work environment compares to others, but I suspect they're more security and time=money oriented than most (and they're getting worse).

Could be they let LJ slide because it's not a bandwidth hog like MySpace and it's not like a ton of people really use LJ in comparison to MySpace.

I don't think it's anything that intelligent on their part - If anything a Russian based entity would be more likely to be blocked by them. I think their scanners automatically determine if a non-work-related IP address is being hit too often. I'm wondering if the comment above is right and the IP address is variable, thus foiling their attempts at blocking.
