Weird things in movies that bother one

I was talking to my mom about movies on Sunday, and the subject of "weird things about movies that have bothered us over the years" came up. My pet gripe is the intergalactic exploration team that invariably encounters carbon-based aliens with humanoid characteristics. It's a big universe and there are many other elements, temperature ranges visual and audio frequency ranges, types of consciousness... Oh, never mind.

So my mom then told me what *her* pet gripe was. "How come in EVERY movie, the main characters always 1) find a parking space right away, and 2) it is always the BEST parking space. They can be driving to a public building, or a shopping mall, or anywhere, and they ALWAYS find the best parking space!!!"

My mummy is funny.

Yeah... the humanoid alien thing is a big pet peeve with me too. Also, it annoys me how movies and television shows and stuff don't seem to care about historical or scientific accuracy. I mean really, who in their right mind would think that a little dog can go right up to a lava flow and sniff at it and be ok? or that lava flows that quickly above ground, where it's actively cooling? or that one can drive over semi-cooled lava and not have the gas tank explode? or that one can outrun a pyroclastic flow???? Or what makes them think that an asteroid the size of Texas would go undiscovered until right before it hits the Earth? or that said asteroid (comet, whatever they called it) would not be formed into at least a rough approximation of a sphere by its own gravity? or that the gravity on this asteroid would be anywhere near enough to enable people to walk or drive about on it??

Ok. That's enough rant for now. I'm a geek, I know.

... And they would probably find the perfect parking space while doing all of the above...
