I'm in ur attic spawning ur Keyboardz

I realized after I got my laptop that it didn't have a PS-2 port -- only USB ports. Although I have plenty of USB to PS2 adapters all over the house, I don't have one single PS2 to USB adapter. Therefore, all my PS2 keyboards were unusable on the laptop. I needed a USB keyboard. There was one in the house (Rialian's) but the keys are a bit sticky, so I wanted a new one just like it.

I went to the most convenient place that has keyboards (Best Buy), to find a generic, 20-buck USB keyboard,. That was when I found out that Best Buy didn't carry any USB keyboards - only expensive cordless ones that were $50 and up. For one thing, I am not impressed with cordless keyboards - the one I did try kept losing its connection whenever anything (like a cat) got between it and the box. For another, I wasn't willing to spend over $50 on anything that might fall victim to a spilled drink. I left.

Later that same evening, I decided to clean out the attic. After the last camping trip, I had not really reorganized it, and I had been missing a VCR that I wanted to use to digitize some of my old VHS tapes. We had recently bought a piece of hardware for that purpose, only it wasn't compatible with Ubuntu. Now that I had the laptop, that wouldn't be an issue anymore. Hence the inspiration to find it. Wellp, I didn't find the VCR in the attic, but I did find ... a Logitech USB keyboard.

I don't know if it came from the same place as the Accordion. Probably not. That seems to be from a slightly different dimension than the Keyboard. It was also spawned from a different storage area. So we have one storage area that spawns musical instruments and another that spawns technology that is being phased out.

I can't complain, even though I never did find my VCR... The keyboard was an exact duplicate of Rialian's...

... of the variety that I wanted. I should check to see if Microcenter moved in yet. CompUsa closed and they were supposed to take over - they have everything and probably could have sold me the right adapter.

I am continually fascinated by the tales of objects your house spawns for you.

We're still not at the level of Rialian's dad's driveway, however, which spawned a 1979 Caprice station wagon transmission when it was needed...

I would look at it as more of a "Dimension that Spawns Updated User Interfaces". USB keyboards aren't really being phased out. Best Buy just caters to the Technologically Influencable a bit too much at times.

Now if it had spawned an 88-key XT keyboard, then I would have been really impressed. Of course you would have to re-title the dimension though.

Maybe it only spawns what is needed. Though why we needed an accordion is a question. I hope the closet doesn't think we need a monkey to go with it.

I wouldn't ordinarily put a monkey together with an accordion. If it spawns cymbals, then I would worry about a monkey.

The first thing I though of when I though "Who would use and accordion?" was actually "Oh, the uboat men from Das Boat." I'm not sure if that makes me an uber-geek, or the fact that if it did spawn WWII German uboat men I would be begging to camp out at your house.

I am putting way too much thought into how the spawning gate would work. (ie Does it grab then randomly from the 40s or from today? Would they be grabbed right before they would perish, sparing them from death? If they were Nazis, can we throw them back?)

Either that, or your house is just one big replicator (isn't that what it's called? I have residual Trek knowledge from having a Trekkie as a dad... LOL)

I think it's more like a slight phase shift, in which the whole environment jumps or shifts ever so slightly to the side... there are telltale signs, such as missing objects or new objects that weren't there before, or maybe just a feel... The signs are only detectable by those who notice.

Then again, maybe I just watched too much Rocky Horror Picture show as a kid...

If you need a PS2-to-USB converter, I have a spare that you can borrow.

Thanks, I may take you up on it since I have a lot of PS2 keyboards that could be used. Meanwhile I'd already ordered one from Amazon a few days ago... Used and new for $3.25 and up...

I can either drop it off before I leave on Sunday or I can leave it with Lyssa or Laurelinde.

Thank you for the offer. Only give it to me if you want to get rid of it (in which case, I'll get it the next time I see you and it's handy) -- the one I ordered did arrive.
