Trip to Rivendell

Yesterday we went to Rivendell to help [livejournal.com profile] rialian's parents with setting up the structures necessary to plant a terraced garden, the intent of which is to prevent erosion and runoff. We had to figure out some way to wall up the side of a dirt embankment without looking ugly. At first we were just going to place rocks along the embankment, but the Father of Rialian had a better idea - we would first wall it up with cinderblocks, pour dirt in the cinderblocks, and then we would wall it up with more natural-looking flat rocks, creating the terrace. The Mom of Rialian didn't quite agree at first, but when we showed her how it would look (there was something similar already created in one of the flower beds) she agreed to let us try it out. I really enjoyed building terraces with rocks and scrabbling around in the dirt. Building a stone wall was really fun, and the end result looked pretty. I can't wait to see it when it has stuff planted in it and hanging over the edge of it - that will look very nice.

Oooh dirt... Scrabbling around in the dirt is fun. So is mud under the feet and between the toes. That's fun too... :D

We need a terrace in our garden too (mainly to stop our garden falling next-door, where the land is four feet lower than ours). That sounds like a good plan, and easy to do. :)

There is something very spiritual about digging in the dirt. It has cleansing properties that make each of us equal to the other. The earth is a wonderful thing to bind with to have interaction with. It is also very soothing to the soul. Glad that you had the opportunity of this. I miss my garden. I loved working in it.
