Ah, so that's what it's called. I think this was considered fashionable when it was done, but to me, the effect of the light color over the dark looked unintentionally messy. I prefer the wood with nothing on it at all except a bit of furniture oil, maybe a little varnish on heavily trafficked surfaces.
